How do the spaces we inhabit shape our experience—and how are those spaces transformed by technology?
The Phenomenology East and West Summer School brings European phenomenology into conversation with East Asian philosophical traditions, exploring how space, technology, and embodied experience shape our lives.
For four days in Cork, we will think across traditions and disciplines—and ask how these encounters might open new possibilities for thinking, creating, and living together.
02 / The 2027 theme
Space and Technē
Space is never merely a neutral container. It is lived, perceived, practised, and created. Technē—technique, craft, art, technology—shapes and reshapes our spatial experience, from architecture and movement to digital environments and AI.
This year’s Summer School explores these evolving relationships across philosophical, artistic, and practical perspectives, through a distinctive East–West dialogue.
Explore the theme
How do technologies orient us in the world? When do they enable movement, and when do they constrain it? What can traditions of making, dwelling, and embodied practice teach us about the spaces we create?
Our conversations reach across philosophy, architecture, arts and performance, dance and movement studies, and digital and spatial humanities. AI, robotics, and automation bring fresh urgency to these questions.
Small groups
Close, discussion-based learning with faculty and peers in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
Graduate credit

From Summer School
to publication
The best student essay will be selected for publication in the Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology, offering an opportunity to develop your work for an international audience.
About the essay prize
Competition eligibility, submission requirements, judging details, and deadlines will be published before entries open. Entry to the prize will be separate from submitting work for graduate credit.

Who is the Summer School for?
MA and PhD students, early-career researchers, artists, architects, performers, and other practitioners working with space, embodiment, or technology. The school welcomes an interdisciplinary conversation across philosophical traditions.
Can I receive graduate credit?
Graduate ECTS credit is planned for eligible participants. The credit allocation, assessment, attendance requirements, and recognition arrangements will be published before applications open.
What will I need to apply?
A short biography, your research interests, and a statement explaining what you would like to bring to—and take from—the Summer School. Full application guidance, fees, and deadlines are forthcoming.
